What could be a sensible second life cycle for odd lots? To answer this question, Création Baumann opened the doors to their warehouse stock, hence reversing the traditional creation process: instead of the product idea determining the choice of suitable materials, it is the textiles determining the product idea.
Company The heart of our weaving keeps on beating. Founded in 1886, Création Baumann is one of the central hubs of activity in the world of textiles. Through years of growth and change, one thing has always remained: our passion for fabrics. Création Baumann is an independent family-run business focusing on long-term objectives. We treasure our independence and leverage it to create more value for our customers, partners, and employees. Facts about Création Baumann: - Product range comprising more than 6,000 articles - In-house design team - Company-own production in Switzerland - ISO 9001/14001 SQS/IQNet - Represented worldwide in 40 countries - Subsidiaries in 9 countries - 232 employees worldwide - Export share: 64% 1886 to 1950: Pioneering spirit The two textile salesmen Friedrich Baumann and Albert Brand get to know each other in Paris. In 1886, they found a company in Langenthal for the production and sale of linen and half linen. After almost twenty prosperous years of trading, they decide to go their separate ways. In 1905, Friedrich Baumann opens the first mechanical linen mill. The company survives economic crises and world wars so that at the beginning of the 1950s, the owner’s son, Fritz Baumann, gets to work on planning a new factory. 1951 to 1958: Creativity Using the ‘Goldfaden’ (gold thread) brand name, the Baumann + Co. linen mill initially launches a collection of high-quality linen goods, which corresponds to the changing lifestyle of the time. The wholesale trade immediately demands decorative textile materials made of linen, cotton and spun rayon, and the careful conscious design of these fabrics begins. At the end of the 1950s, the ‘Création Baumann’ label appears for the first time, this being the name of the whole enterprise today. On an artistic level, Cornelia Forster sets a distinctive example with her designs in the 1950s. 1959 to 1965: Competence What starts out as an experiment becomes a mark of quality: in 1960, the first textile designer is hired on a permanent basis. In 1962, the Swedish textile designer Edna Lundskog joins the in-house creative studio, and her spirit is woven into every fabric to this day. When the production of linen goods ends and is replaced entirely by decorative fabrics, the machinery is also modernised and sales regenerated. The core expertise of the company today – the creation, production and sale of fabrics to specialist dealers – evolves from this. 1966 to 1975: Growth The company opens showrooms in Zurich, Paris and Frankfurt. The business flourishes and new fabrics become bestsellers which often last for decades. Within a few years, from 1968 to 1972, sales double. Création Baumann responds to the economic crisis and the appreciation of the franc with an invention which makes the hanging and making up of curtains more efficient – and which opens the door to the new business area of interior shading. And another milestone: the first computer is put into operation in Langenthal. 1976 to 1984: Renewal After 26 years without a print collection, Création Baumann enters this creative business segment again. Thanks to the modern cylinder film printing machine, warps such as fabrics in six colours can be printed both quickly and cost-efficiently. At the same time, the new high-bay warehouse reduces delivery times, and the brand name ‘Création Baumann’ is used as standard in all sample books and on printed matter. The urge to progress shapes the company’s architecture too: the new exhibition and administrative building attracts admiration from all over the world. 1985 to 1992: The future Jörg Baumann acquires a house with grounds in the Italian province of Bergamo, for the purpose of using it as a creative retreat. For a decade, talented young people go there to develop their fresh ideas and collections, and even to this day the residence is open to artists. Création Baumann initiates ‘Designers’ Saturday’ in its Swiss homeland, where the interior design elite convene every other year. Another important step towards the future is the construction of an automated storage system – the largest investment in the company’s history. 1993 to 2002: Qualities Originally formed by chance, the ‘Création Baumann’ brand name has become more and more firmly established in the course of its history: trade alone does not determine success, it is ideas and design which primarily define it. A good indication of this is the brand logo, which, in 1995, was formed using the modern, creative script you see today. Creative expertise is also reflected in the cooperation with the haute couture producer Jakob Schlaepfer, and in the newly opened Design Center in Langenthal. 2003 to the present day: Innovation Whether it is digital printing, adhesive textiles or specialist functions such as light control, dimming and sound absorption, Création Baumann uses pioneering technical innovations to carry the founders’ spirit into the present. The many years of research and development are bearing fruit, including the ‘Textil und Objekt’ prize for innovation for the acoustics collection and the ‘Design Preis Schweiz’ for the ‘GECKO’ adhesive textiles. The slogan for the anniversary year in 2011 aptly sums up the balance of experience and renewal: 125 years young.
